US seeks deals for foreign cash stash

American corporations are keeping $1.3 trillion of cash outside the US to fund acquisitions and escape paying tax. Politicians want to tempt it back home

When Microsoft bid $8.5bn for Luxembourg-based internet telecoms group Skype last month, a large part of the purchase price was paid with the cash it holds outside the US.

The deal brought into sharp focus just how much US corporations hold outside the US - current estimates are more than $1 trillion - and coincided with political moves to tempt the cash back home.
