Viatel adds to junk gloom with default

Viatel, the US telecommunications group, has become the latest failure in the high yield market after saying that it would not make a bond coupon payment due on April 15.

The default is specifically on a €300m ($265m) bond issue. However, the assumption is that the company will not be able to honour payments on €1.9bn of euro and dollar-denominated bonds.
