Jean-René Fourtou will take a back seat at Vivendi Universal next spring, when he is due to step down as chief executive following planned changes to the group's corporate governance structure.

Vivendi is planning to split its board structure. Fourtou will become chairman of a new supervisory board of the existing non-executive directors.
