The flotation of Airtel, Spain's second-largest mobile phone company, looks likely to be scrapped if the UK's Vodafone Group proceeds with its plan to purchase BT's stake in the company.

Both BT and Vodafone confirmed on Tuesday morning they were in discussions which could see Vodafone buy up BT's stake in Airtel as well as its holdings in Japan Telecom and in J-Phone.
