As inauguration preparations get underway to swear in President-elect Joe Biden on 20 January, law enforcement officials are fighting to contain mass protests across the US and beef up security in Washington, DC.

Tens of thousands of National Guard security personnel have descended on the US Capitol ahead of Wednesday’s ceremony, with the city being placed under an emergency state as the threat of protests loomed.
