For Nico Marais, the past 18 months as chief executive of Wells Fargo Asset Management have been what he calls “character building”, to say the least.

The South African landed the top job in June 2019, having previously led the San Francisco asset manager’s multi-asset solutions business. The 56-year-old wasted no time in shaking up the business, making its culture and personnel his top priorities.
