WestLB returns to profit

WestLB, the German bank, this morning revealed profits of nearly €604m ($729m) for last year, the first time it has made money since it restructured in 2002. Investment banking was its most profitable business.

The group said its investment banking business made pre-tax profits of €397m. It cited strong performances in project financing and securitisation and improvements in the equities business as driving profit gains.
