What is a hung parliament – and what happens next?

The UK election has ended in a hung parliament, after the Conservative Party came up short of a majority in the snap general election.

Votes have been counted in 649 of the 650 total constituencies, and Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party won 318 seats. The opposition Labour Party got 261 seats, followed by the Scottish National Party with 35 and the Liberal Democrats with 12 seats.
