![Where are all the City’s ugly people?](https://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/FN-AA989_ugly_M_20170712132804.jpg)
Discrimination of gender, race, age and sexual orientation have all been outlawed. But there is a form of discrimination that still persists in the City and far beyond. It has a significant effect and yet it is rarely challenged. Through no fault of their own some people suffer unjustly while others enjoy benefits they don’t deserve. I am talking about lookism.
Looks determine much more than what partner we attract. Various studies have found there is a correlation between a man’s height and his salary. One study found attractive men and women were significantly more likely to receive a reply to a job application, with ugly people far less likely. Another study found less attractive people earned 10-15% less than more attractive ones. Studies have found attractive people are given better performance reviews and more likely to be selected for management training. They tend to be regarded as more talented, kind and honest. And they are more popular and develop better social skills.
