With Boris Johnson in the intensive care unit battling Covid-19, Dominic Raab, the foreign secretary and first secretary of state, will “deputise where necessary” for the prime minister.

Raab was deemed “designated survivor” on 23 March if Johnson became incapacitated by the novel coronavirus.
