Why Man Group invests in Japan, but from York

The region has long been a tough place for investors, but Man Group thinks it can crack the market from 6,000 miles away

Over the past two months, dozens of Japanese executives have been travelling thousands of miles to York. Not New York — the original one, up in the north of England.

They are there to meet portfolio managers from Man Group. Nine time zones away from Tokyo, the hedge fund manages its Japan-focused fund in the city, and is hoping to cash in as the Japanese market shakes off decades of malaise.
