A new variant of coronavirus originating in South Africa has sparked concerns among governments, health regulators and scientists globally, as experts seek to understand the potential risks of the strain.

The new variant, known as the South African variant or 501.V2, is a mutation of the original coronavirus strain. It is much more contagious, as the virus attempts to find ways around the increased precautions humans are taking to avoid getting sick.
