Willem Frederik (Wim) Duisenberg is the 65-year-old chain smoking economist who has the unenviable task of steering the European Central Bank through this historic period of economic and monetary union.

So far Duisenberg has played a diplomatic and steady hand through the first, turbulent year of the euro's existence.
