Never before has the financial services industry and the UK government been so focused on attempting to stamp out gender discrimination in the workplace, yet in reality little appears to have changed, according to Financial News’ Women in Finance Survey 2017.

On the face of it, this year’s survey results paint a worsening picture, with more than two-thirds (68.4%) of women in European finance believing their gender has damaged their chances of having a successful career. In 2016, it was less than two-thirds (64.5%), almost the same as five years ago – long before the Women in Finance Charter linked the bonuses of senior bosses to gender diversity targets, or companies had to report their gender pay gap and carry out equal pay audits.
