The Credit Suisse First Boston Tremont hedge fund index was up 0.9% for January - an identical return to that of the Dow Jones industrial index.

Emerging market and global macro strategies were the best performing hedge fund sub-categories returning 4.3% and 3.3% respectively.The S&P 500 returned 3.5% in January.
